Galatians 5:13-15
13 For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. 14 For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 15 But if you bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not consumed by one another.
What’s going down in Galatia?
- Serious problem with False Teachers
- Sneaky mix of FAITH + WORKS
- False teachers said grace is dangerous!
Galatians is a refutation of false teaching & a defense of the believer’s freedom in Christ!
• We’ve been set free FROM sin & evil…
• And set free TO a life that honors God and builds up His Church
Use Your Freedom in the Right Way – Gal. 5:13
Roman slavery took 1 of 4 forms…
- Slavery in the mines, usually for criminals/enemies
- Rural slavery
- Urban household slaves – many of whom willingly submitted themselves to their masters b/c they loved their master or possibly to work off a debt
- how Philippians refers to Jesus when it says He took on the form of a doulos
- Imperial slaves, household of the emperor
“The amazing thing about love is that it…solves every problem in human relations. If you love people, you won’t steal from them, or lie about them, or envy them.”
